Instructor Spotlight: Ms. Cathy

Ms. Cathy is a superstar STEM instructor teaching virtually nationwide with STEM Center USA since 2022. She’s a Software Engineering student at San Jose State University graduating this May 2024.

Ms. Cathy joined our team in May 2022 as a Migrant Education Program instructor. She works across age groups reaching TK - 3rd graders in Junior STEM and 4th - 12th graders in Discover STEM. Ms. Cathy teaches a variety of courses including Junior STEM, Virtual Reality, Coding with micro:bit, Circuits, Minecraft Game Design, and our hands-on math modules! 

Ms. Cathy graduates with her degree in Software Engineering from San Jose State University this May 2024. On campus, she is the President of Science Extravaganza, a Member of the SOLES Board (Society of Latino Engineers and Scientists), and a member of Girls Who Code! She recently participated in an event called Science Extravaganza to inspire local San Jose middle schoolers who are underrepresented in STEM to pursue higher education and realize the opportunities in STEM.

Her future goals include creating an app, being a start-up founder, and becoming a Technical Program Manager in EdTech! Outside of academics and her career aspirations, Cathy has a passion for ceramics. She took a few classes at SJSU and looks forward to returning to the studio after graduation to continue her art!

What is one word that comes to mind when you think about STEM Center USA?

”Inspired.”

What do you enjoy most about your work?

“The smile students get on their faces when they realize they get to keep their STEM boxes, or when they solve a problem they didn’t think they could, or when they tell me about their own career goals and dreams.”

Share why you love working with STEM Center USA students.

"It’s truly an honor knowing that for a lot of the students I teach I’ll be the first engineer they meet! I personally didn’t ever meet a software engineer until I was already in college, but thanks to STEM Center even my youngest Early STEM students get to learn about becoming an engineer from me."

What have you learned in your time on our team in your position(s)? How has this helped you personally or professionally?

“I think one of the biggest things I’ve learned is having more humility and to be grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had in my own educational and professional journey. This keeps me determined to keep working towards my goals no matter how many roadblocks I may face.”
